Highlights:
Planned to be the tallest statue in Indonesia, Garuda Wisnu Kencana who clung to Hindu mythology about the search for Amerta (the elixir of life). According to this myth, Garuda agreed to be ridden by Lord Wisnu in exchange for the right to use the elixir to free his enslaved mother.
The idea of the monument was controversial and the religious authorities of the island did not agree, claiming that its extraordinary size could influence the spiritual balance of the island and that its commercial nature was not appropriate, but some groups support the project, because it will be a new tourist attraction in arid land.
The statue of 75 m high and 65 m wide was designed by Nyoman Nuarta. It is sitting on a pedestal to bring the total height of the monument to 121 m (397 ft), which is almost 30 m (98 ft) higher than the Statue of Liberty in the United States.
The completed monument is almost as tall as a 21-story building and weighs 4000 tons. It makes it the heaviest statue in the country, it is built of copper and brass sheets, with a stainless steel frame and a skeleton, as well as a steel and concrete column. The outer cover measures 22 000 m 2. in the area.
