Pure Lempuyang Temple

The temple of Lempuyang, known locally as Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of the oldest and most respected temples in Bali, along with Besakih (also known as the temple of the mother of Bali), which is also believed to predate most of the Hindu temples on the island. The main temple is located at 1,175 meters above sea level, at the top of Mount Lempuyang, in eastern Bali. The heights are accessible through a steep staircase of over 1,700 steps, with several attractions along the way. Because they include several other temples and hordes of gray long-tailed macaques that inhabit the surrounding mountain forests.

The Temple of Mother

While avid hikers will love the mix of mountains and cultural excursions the eastern region of Bali has to offer. Those who are not willing to climb to the peak at the Lempuyang Temple can still enjoy the splendid views at the great Pura Penataran Agung temple at the foot of the mountain.

The first to appear on the pilgrimage, this temple offers a breathtaking view with its imposing dragon stairs, perfect for photos. The best views are further up the stairs, from where you can see all the way through the green wooded slopes and the neighboring Mount Agung, the highest peak in Bali and the home of the Besakih Temple. There are many taxis and motorcycles operated by local locals that can take you to where the tarmac ends at Penataran Agung, for a negotiable fee.9 grey macaques here are not as curious and mischievous as their relatives in Uluwatu, on the south coast of the island.therefore it is always a golden rule not to have any loose equipment or feed them.

The interior of the Lempuyang Pure Temple

The temple itself is smaller in comparison to the Penataran Agung, but there is a more mystical feeling about the surroundings and the calm. The prayers continue with refreshing holy water from the priest that soothes the body, mind and soul. Naturally, the temple is not very crowded, there is at the top of the list of places to see, something out of the ordinary.

The locals firmly believe that, in addition to maintaining a respectful behavior and speech, you should not complain while you are climbing; otherwise, you will never reach the main temple at the top. The strong-willed pilgrims enjoy splendid views of the mountain range of eastern Bali and the coast after a steep pass. Surrounded by a lush environment and fresh mountain air. After an approximate two-hour climb, the Lempuyang temple at the top welcomes the tired pilgrims with a rewarding view and a quiet place to breathe.
